-bar / -lich adjectiveDas Problem ist lösbar.can be solved
sein zu + infinitiveDas Problem ist zu lösen.can / must be solved

Useful -bar / -lich adjectives

Examples

  • Das Problem lässt sich leicht lösen. The problem can be solved easily.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Das Problem lässt lösen.✓ Das Problem lässt sich lösen.“Can be solved” with lassen always needs the reflexive sich: das Problem lässt sich lösen.
  • ✗ Der Plan ist machenbar.✓ Der Plan ist machbar.Like English “-able”, -bar attaches to the verb stem, without -en: mach-bar, not machen-bar.
  • ✗ Die Folgen lassen sich nicht genau berechnet.✓ Die Folgen lassen sich nicht genau berechnen.English “cannot be calculated” uses a participle, but sich lassen takes the infinitive: berechnen.
  • ✗ Das Problem ist zu lösbar.✓ Das Problem ist lösbar.Lösbar already means “can be solved”, so zu is not added. Zu belongs to the other construction: ist zu lösen.
  • ✗ Sein Argument ist gut nachvollziehen.✓ Sein Argument ist gut nachvollziehbar. After sein you need the adjective with -bar, not the infinitive: nachvollziehbar (understandable).
