O subjuntivo (I suggest he go)
Depois de verbos e expressões de exigência, sugestão e importância, o inglês formal usa a forma base do verbo para todas as pessoas: sem -s, sem passado. O português usa o subjuntivo (“sugiro que ele faça”), mas a estrutura inglesa é diferente.
| gatilho | exemplo |
|---|---|
| suggest, recommend, insist, demand | I suggest that he take a break. |
| it is essential / important / vital that | It is essential that she be on time. |
| negativa | They insisted that we not tell anyone. |
Alternativas
O inglês britânico usa muitas vezes should: I suggest that he should take a break. Na fala do dia a dia: I suggest he takes a break. Em nenhum caso suggest e insist são seguidos de pessoa + to.

Erros comuns

- ✗ I insist you to stay for lunch.✓ I insist that you stay for lunch.O português diz “insisto que você fique”, com que + subjuntivo; insist you to não existe, a estrutura é insist that + sujeito + verbo.
- ✗ It is essential that the contract will be signed today.✓ It is essential that the contract be signed today.O português usaria o subjuntivo “seja assinado”; o inglês formal usa a forma base be, e não will.
- ✗ We recommend that he do not travel alone.✓ We recommend that he not travel alone. No subjuntivo, a negativa é not + forma base, sem do.
- ✗ It is vital that every document be sign.✓ It is vital that every document be signed. No subjuntivo passivo, depois de be vem o particípio: be signed.
