Common mistakes

  • ✗ Yo hací la tarea.✓ Yo hice la tarea.Hacer changes its stem to hic- in the preterite. English regular -ed verbs tempt learners to use the regular ending.
  • ✗ Ella dició la verdad.✓ Ella dijo la verdad.Decir has the irregular stem dij- and the ending -o without an accent.
  • ✗ Yo tení hambre.✓ Yo tuve hambre.Tener becomes tuv- in the preterite. English “had” changes the stem completely too, but in a different way.
  • ✗ Ellos dijieron la verdad.✓ Ellos dijeron la verdad. After the stem ending in -j the ending loses its i: -eron, not -ieron.
  • ✗ Yo puedí ir.✓ Yo pude ir.Poder has the irregular stem pud- and the ending -e without an accent.
