- The accent matters: hablo (I speak) / habló (he spoke).
- -er and -ir share the same endings.
- Spelling in the yo form: llegar → llegué, buscar → busqué, empezar → empecé.
- Typical time words: ayer, anoche, la semana pasada, hace dos años, en 2019.
Examples

Common mistakes
- ✗ Ayer hablo con ella.✓ Ayer hablé con ella.Hablo is the present. The preterite yo form is hablé, with an accent. English “talked” does not change for person.
- ✗ Ayer comé paella.✓ Ayer comí paella. The preterite of -er and -ir verbs ends in -í. English speakers copy the -ar ending.
- ✗ Tú hablastes mucho.✓ Tú hablaste mucho. The tú ending is -aste, without the -s that English speakers add after -ste.
- ✗ Ella hablo ayer.✓ Ella habló ayer. The accent on the final vowel marks the preterite and keeps it distinct from yo hablo.
- ✗ Ellos hablón mucho.✓ Ellos hablaron mucho. The ellos preterite ending is -aron. English “talked” stays the same for every person.
