Common mistakes

  • ✗ Cuando era niño, juego mucho.✓ Cuando era niño, jugaba mucho.“Used to” is the imperfect. English also uses the simple past here, so the present is tempting because it is shorter.
  • ✗ Yo hablabo español.✓ Yo hablaba español.The yo ending for -ar verbs is -aba. The same form is used for él and ella.
  • ✗ Yo comíba mucho.✓ Yo comía mucho.Only -ar verbs have the -b- in the imperfect (-aba). -er and -ir verbs use -ía, so English speakers who learn -aba first add it everywhere.
  • ✗ Yo ibo al cole.✓ Yo iba al cole.Ir is irregular in the imperfect: iba, not ibo.
  • ✗ Eramos amigos.✓ Éramos amigos. The nosotros form of ser needs a written accent: éramos.
