Examples

  • Cuando llamé, ya se habían ido. When I called, they had already left.
  • Me dijo que no había dormido nada. She told me she hadn’t slept at all.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Había comí.✓ Había comido. After había the participle ends in -ido for -er and -ir verbs. The preterite comí is not a participle.
  • ✗ Habíamos hablar.✓ Habíamos hablado.Haber is followed by the participle, never the infinitive. English “had spoken” has an -en that learners forget.
  • ✗ Ya he comido cuando llegué.✓ Ya había comido cuando llegué.An action earlier than another past action takes the pluperfect. English “had eaten” already shows this, but the perfect is easier.
  • ✗ Había escribido.✓ Había escrito.Escribir has the irregular participle escrito, as English “written” is irregular too.
  • ✗ Habían no llegado.✓ No habían llegado. The negative no goes before the whole verb phrase, so before habían. English puts “not” after “had”: “had not arrived”.
