Conditional (would)
The conditional expresses what would happen. Like the future, it adds endings to the whole infinitive, and it uses the same irregular stems.
| endings | example | |
|---|---|---|
| yo | -ía | hablaría |
| tú | -ías | comerías |
| él / ella / usted | -ía | viviría |
| nosotros | -íamos | tendríamos |
| vosotros | -íais | haríais |
| ellos / ustedes | -ían | dirían |
Uses
- Politeness: ¿Podría ayudarme? Me gustaría un café.
- Advice: Yo que tú, hablaría con ella. Deberías descansar.
- Hypotheses: Con más dinero, viajaría más.
- Future in the past: Dijo que vendría (he said he would come).
- Guess about the past: Serían las tres (it was probably three).
Examples
- ¿Te importaría cerrar la puerta?Would you mind closing the door?
- Me encantaría vivir junto al mar.I would love to live by the sea.
- Yo en tu lugar no diría nada.In your place I wouldn’t say anything.

Common mistakes
- ✗ Cuando era niño, jugaría mucho.✓ Cuando era niño, jugaba mucho.English “would play” also means a past habit, but Spanish uses the imperfect for that, not the conditional.
- ✗ Yo hablaria.✓ Yo hablaría.The conditional ending always carries a written accent on the i: -ía.
- ✗ Yo haceria la tarea.✓ Yo haría la tarea.Hacer has the irregular conditional stem har-, the same as in the future.
- ✗ Yo teneria tiempo.✓ Yo tendría tiempo.Tener uses tendr- in both the future and the conditional. The regular stem tener- never appears.
- ✗ Yo quisería ir.✓ Yo querría ir.Querer has the irregular stem querr-. Quis- belongs to the preterite quise, so learners mix the two.
