Preterite or imperfect?

Both are past tenses. The preterite moves the story forward with completed events. The imperfect paints the background: what was going on, what things were like, what used to happen.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Cuando era niño, fui al parque cada día.✓ Cuando era niño, iba al parque cada día.A repeated habit in the past uses the imperfect. English “went” does not show that, so learners pick the preterite.
  • ✗ Ayer comía a las dos.✓ Ayer comí a las dos.One completed event at a specific time takes the preterite. English simple past “ate” would suit both.
  • ✗ Mientras yo leí, ella cocinó.✓ Mientras yo leía, ella cocinaba. Two actions going on at the same time are both imperfect. English “while I was reading” shows this with “was”.
  • ✗ Fueron las tres cuando llegué.✓ Eran las tres cuando llegué.Telling the time in the past takes the imperfect: eran las tres. English “it was three” hides the tense choice.
  • ✗ Yo tuve veinte años.✓ Yo tenía veinte años.Age in the past describes a state, so the imperfect is used. English “I was twenty” is one simple form.
