The passive: ser + participle and se

Spanish has a passive with ser + participle, but in everyday language the se passive or an active sentence is far more common.

constructionexamplestyle
ser + participle (+ por)El puente fue construido por los romanos.formal, news, history
se + verbEl puente se construyó en el siglo I.neutral, very common
estar + participleEl puente está construido en piedra.resulting state
active with fronted objectEl puente lo construyeron los romanos.spoken, emphasis

Rules

  • The participle agrees with the subject: La carta fue escrita. Los libros fueron publicados.
  • The agent goes with por: Fue descubierto por Fleming.
  • The se passive can’t mention the agent: Se construyó por los romanos ✗.
  • Avoid the ser-passive with the present for ongoing actions: Se está construyendo is more natural than está siendo construido.

Examples

  • La novela fue traducida a veinte idiomas. The novel was translated into twenty languages.
  • Se han vendido todas las entradas. All the tickets have been sold.
  • La tienda está cerrada los domingos. The shop is closed on Sundays.
  • Estos cuadros los pintó Goya. These paintings were painted by Goya.
  • El puente fue construido en 1950.The bridge was built in 1950.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ La casa fue construido.✓ La casa fue construida. The participle agrees with the subject in gender. English “was built” never changes.
  • ✗ Las puertas fueron abierto.✓ Las puertas fueron abiertas.Plural feminine subject: abiertas. English “were opened” is the same for every subject.
  • ✗ La carta fue escribida.✓ La carta fue escrita.Escribir has the irregular participle escrito. English “written” is irregular too, but the pattern differs.
  • ✗ El libro fue escrito de Cervantes.✓ El libro fue escrito por Cervantes. The agent of a passive takes por. English “by” is a different word, so de is a typical wrong guess.
  • ✗ Yo fui dado un libro.✓ Me dieron un libro.English “I was given a book” turns the recipient into the subject. Spanish cannot do this, so the sentence is made active.
