  • The pretérito anterior (hube + participle) appears after apenas, en cuanto, cuando, después de que, tan pronto como.
  • -ra with indicative meaning is accepted in literature but criticised in news writing.
  • The historical present is common in biographies, timelines and museum texts.

Examples

  • Cervantes nace en 1547 y muere en 1616.Cervantes was born in 1547 and died in 1616.
  • El estadio, que fuera inaugurado en 1950, será demolido. The stadium, which was opened in 1950, will be demolished.

  • Entró, miró a su alrededor y sonrió.He came in, looked around and smiled.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Ayer llegué y vi que estuvo cerrado.✓ Ayer llegué y vi que estaba cerrado.A state in the background takes the imperfect. English “was closed” is one form for the background and the event.
  • ✗ Entraba y vio la luz.✓ Entró y vio la luz.Two successive actions are both preterite. The imperfect is for the background.
  • ✗ Era una vez un rey.✓ Había una vez un rey.“Once upon a time there was” uses había, not ser. English “there was” leads learners to era.
  • ✗ Apenas hubo llegar, salió.✓ Apenas hubo llegado, salió.Hubo takes the participle. The infinitive is not used.
  • ✗ Fue en 1492 cuando Colón llegaba a América.✓ Fue en 1492 cuando Colón llegó a América.A dated event is a preterite. English “arrived” does not signal the difference.
