The future subjunctive

The future subjunctive (hablare, tuviere) has disappeared from everyday speech, but it survives in legal texts, fixed expressions and literature. You need to recognise it, not use it.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Si alguien hablarían, será multado.✓ Si alguien hablare, será multado. The future subjunctive of -ar verbs ends in -are. The ending -arían belongs to the conditional.
  • ✗ Quien lo hicieré, pagará.✓ Quien lo hiciere, pagará.The future subjunctive has no written accent. The accented -é belongs to the ordinary future, hará, haré.
  • ✗ Si alguien tenerere tiempo, vendrá.✓ Si alguien tuviere tiempo, vendrá.The stem comes from the preterite: tuvieron gives tuviere. The infinitive stem is not used.
  • ✗ Si alguien vivirere aquí, pagará.✓ Si alguien viviere aquí, pagará.-er and -ir verbs take -iere, not a repeated infinitive ending.
  • ✗ Si alguien comieré, pagará.✓ Si alguien comiere, pagará.Same as the other forms: -iere with no accent, not the -ré of the future indicative.
