Conditions with wenn
wenn means “if” (a condition) or “when / whenever” (a repeated or future event). It starts a subordinate clause, so the verb goes to the end.

Common mistakes
- ✗ Wenn ich Zeit habe, ich rufe dich an.✓ Wenn ich Zeit habe, rufe ich dich an.English starts the main clause with “I”, but after a wenn clause the German main clause starts with its verb.
- ✗ Ruf mich an, wenn du kommst an.✓ Ruf mich an, wenn du ankommst. In a wenn clause a separable verb comes back together at the end: wenn du ankommst.
- ✗ Wenn das Wetter ist gut, fahren wir ans Meer.✓ Wenn das Wetter gut ist, fahren wir ans Meer.English says “if the weather is good”, but wenn sends the verb to the end of its clause: wenn das Wetter gut ist.
- ✗ Wann du Fragen hast, ruf mich an.✓ Wenn du Fragen hast, ruf mich an.English “when” here means “whenever” or “if”, and German uses wenn. Wann is only for questions about time.
- ✗ Wenn du Hilfe brauchst, dann ich helfe dir.✓ Wenn du Hilfe brauchst, dann helfe ich dir.Dann takes position 1 of the main clause, so the verb follows it directly: dann helfe ich dir.
