Subordinate clauses with weil and dass

weil (because) and dass (that) start a subordinate clause (Nebensatz). In a subordinate clause, the conjugated verb goes to the very end. A comma always separates it from the main clause.

Main clauseConjunctionMiddleVerb (end)
Ich lerne Deutsch,weilich in Deutschlandarbeite.
Ich weiß,dassdu müdebist.
Er sagt,dasser späterkommen kann.

Rules

  • With two verbs, the conjugated one is last: …, weil ich arbeiten muss.
  • Separable verbs join together: …, weil ich früh aufstehe.
  • If the subordinate clause comes first, the main clause starts with its verb: Weil es regnet, nehmen wir den Bus. (verb – comma – verb)
  • dass often follows: sagen, denken, glauben, wissen, hoffen, finden.

Examples

  • Ich komme nicht, weil ich krank bin.I’m not coming because I’m ill.
  • Ich hoffe, dass alles gut geht.I hope that everything goes well.
  • Weil der Bus spät kam, bin ich zu spät.Because the bus was late, I’m late.
  • Sie sagt, dass sie keine Zeit hat.She says that she has no time.
  • Ich glaube, dass wir den Termin verschieben müssen.I think that we have to postpone the appointment.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Ich komme nicht, weil ich muss arbeiten.✓ Ich komme nicht, weil ich arbeiten muss.English keeps “I have to work” together, but after weil the conjugated verb goes to the very end, after the infinitive.
  • ✗ Wir hoffen, dass alles geht gut.✓ Wir hoffen, dass alles gut geht.English says “that everything goes well”, but a dass clause sends the verb to the end: dass alles gut geht.
  • ✗ Weil es regnet, wir nehmen den Bus.✓ Weil es regnet, nehmen wir den Bus.English starts the main clause with its subject, but in German the weil clause takes position 1, so the main clause begins with its verb.
  • ✗ Ich denke dass er kommt.✓ Ich denke, dass er kommt.English never puts a comma before “that”, but German always separates a dass clause with a comma.
  • ✗ Ich bin müde, weil ich stehe früh auf.✓ Ich bin müde, weil ich früh aufstehe. In a weil clause a separable verb joins up again at the end: weil ich früh aufstehe.
