Level A2

und, aber, oder, denn, sondern

These five conjunctions join two main clauses without changing the word order. They stand in “position 0”, so the second clause keeps its normal order with the verb in position 2.

aber or sondern?

  • aber adds a contrast: Das Auto ist alt, aber gut.
  • sondern corrects a negative statement: Er ist nicht Arzt, sondern Lehrer.

Examples

  • Ich bleibe zu Hause, denn ich bin krank.I’m staying home because I’m ill.
  • Kommst du mit oder bleibst du hier? Are you coming or staying here?
  • Er ist nicht Arzt, sondern Lehrer. He isn’t a doctor but a teacher.
  • Ich lerne Deutsch und meine Frau lernt Englisch.I’m learning German and my wife is learning English.
  • Die Wohnung ist schön, aber sie ist teuer. The flat is nice, but it’s expensive.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Wir nehmen den Bus, denn regnet es.✓ Wir nehmen den Bus, denn es regnet.Denn stands outside the clause (position 0), so the subject comes first and the verb second: denn es regnet.
  • ✗ Sie ist nicht Ärztin, aber Lehrerin.✓ Sie ist nicht Ärztin, sondern Lehrerin.English “not a doctor but a teacher” uses but, and German needs sondern when you correct a negative.
  • ✗ Ich habe Zeit, aber heute ich arbeite.✓ Ich habe Zeit, aber heute arbeite ich.Aber does not count as a position, so heute fills position 1 and the verb must come next: aber heute arbeite ich.
  • ✗ Fährst du mit oder du bleibst hier?✓ Fährst du mit oder bleibst du hier? After oder the second part is a question too, so its verb comes first, just as in English “or are you staying?”.
  • ✗ Das Hotel ist schön aber es ist teuer.✓ Das Hotel ist schön, aber es ist teuer.English often skips the comma before “but”, but German always puts a comma before aber between two clauses.
