Rules

  • With separable verbs: um … anzurufen.
  • damit works for the same subject too (Ich spare, damit ich ein Auto kaufen kann), but um … zu is shorter and more natural.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Ich schreibe es auf, um du mich verstehst.✓ Ich schreibe es auf, damit du mich verstehst.English “so that you understand” has its own subject, and when the subject changes German needs damit, not um.
  • ✗ Er arbeitet viel um ein Auto kaufen.✓ Er arbeitet viel, um ein Auto zu kaufen.English “in order to buy” has “to”, and um needs zu before the infinitive at the end: um ein Auto zu kaufen.
  • ✗ Ich schreibe eine E-Mail, um zu vereinbaren einen Termin.✓ Ich schreibe eine E-Mail, um einen Termin zu vereinbaren.English puts the object after “to arrange”, but in German everything goes between um and zu + infinitive.
  • ✗ Ich fahre zum Bahnhof, um dich zu abholen.✓ Ich fahre zum Bahnhof, um dich abzuholen. With a separable verb zu goes inside it: ab-zu-holen, also after um.
  • ✗ Ich mache eine Liste, damit nichts vergessen.✓ Ich mache eine Liste, damit ich nichts vergesse.Damit starts a full clause, so it needs its own subject and a conjugated verb at the end: damit ich nichts vergesse.
