Notes

  • weder … noch is already negative: don’t add nicht or kein.
  • When they join whole clauses, entweder and zwar can take position 1 with inversion: Entweder komme ich heute, oder ich rufe an.

Examples

We’ll go either by train or by bus.
  • Sie spricht sowohl Deutsch als auch Englisch. She speaks both German and English.
  • Ich habe weder Zeit noch Geld.I have neither time nor money.

The course is demanding, but very good.

Common mistakes

English says “both German and English”, but beide is a pronoun (“the two”). For “both … and” German uses sowohl … als auch.
  • ✗ Er trinkt keinen Kaffee oder Tee.✓ Er trinkt weder Kaffee noch Tee.English can say “no coffee or tea”, but German links two negated things with weder … noch, which already carries the negation.
English “not only … but also” uses but, and German needs sondern auch, because the first part is negative.
Zwar always pairs with aber (“admittedly … but”). Sondern only follows a negative such as nicht.
Two subjects joined by sowohl … als auch are plural, so the verb is sprechen, as in English “both … speak”.
