Konjunktiv II: wishes and unreal situations
Konjunktiv II is the mood of the unreal: wishes, imagined situations, advice and hypothetical conditions. You already know polite würde/hätte/könnte from A2; here it describes things that are not true.
Forms
- wäre, hätte and the modals könnte, müsste, dürfte, sollte, wollte are used directly.
- A few common verbs have their own form: ginge, käme, wüsste, gäbe, bliebe.
- All other verbs: würde + infinitive (Ich würde reisen).
Unreal conditions

Wishes and advice
- Wishes: Ich wünschte, ich wäre schon fertig. / Wenn ich doch mehr Zeit hätte!
- Advice: An deiner Stelle würde ich … / Du solltest mehr schlafen.

Common mistakes
- ✗ Wenn ich mehr Geld hatte, würde ich reisen.✓ Wenn ich mehr Geld hätte, würde ich reisen.English uses the past form “had” for an unreal condition, but German needs the Konjunktiv with umlaut: hätte. Hatte is a real past.
- ✗ Wenn das Wetter besser wäre, wir könnten grillen.✓ Wenn das Wetter besser wäre, könnten wir grillen.The wenn clause takes position 1, so the main clause starts with its verb: könnten wir grillen.
- ✗ Ich wünsche, ich könnte Klavier spielen.✓ Ich wünschte, ich könnte Klavier spielen.For an unreal wish like English “I wish I could”, German uses the Konjunktiv wünschte, not the present wünsche.
- ✗ Wenn ich du war, würde ich das nicht machen.✓ Wenn ich du wäre, würde ich das nicht machen.English accepts “If I was you”, but German needs the Konjunktiv wäre; war is just the real past of sein.
- ✗ Wenn ich doch mehr Zeit habe!✓ Wenn ich doch mehr Zeit hätte!An exclamation like English “If only I had more time!” is an unreal wish, so the verb is the Konjunktiv hätte.
