Level A2

stellen/stehen, legen/liegen, hängen

German is very precise about how something is placed: standing, lying, sitting or hanging. Each position has two verbs: one for putting (action, accusative, regular) and one for being there (state, dative, irregular).

positionput (wohin? + Akk.)be (wo? + Dat.)
uprightstellen – hat gestelltstehen – hat gestanden
flatlegen – hat gelegtliegen – hat gelegen
sittingsetzen (sich) – hat gesetztsitzen – hat gesessen
hanginghängen – hat gehängthängen – hat gehangen

Which position?

  • stehen: things that stand upright, bottles, furniture, cars, also text in a document (Das steht im Vertrag).
  • liegen: flat things and towns/places: Das Handy liegt auf dem Tisch. Köln liegt am Rhein.
  • hängen: pictures, clothes on a hook, lamps.

Examples

  • Ich stelle die Flasche in den Kühlschrank.I put the bottle in the fridge.
  • Die Flasche steht im Kühlschrank. The bottle is in the fridge.
  • Ich lege die Dokumente auf den Tisch.I put the documents on the table.
  • Die Dokumente liegen auf dem Tisch. The documents are on the table.

  • Die Jacke hängt an der Tür.The jacket is hanging on the door.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Ich setze die Flasche auf den Tisch.✓ Ich stelle die Flasche auf den Tisch.English “put” covers everything, but German says how: a bottle stands upright, so you stellen it. Setzen is for putting someone in a seat.
  • ✗ Köln steht am Rhein.✓ Köln liegt am Rhein.English says a city “is” on a river, and German uses liegen for towns and places, not stehen.
  • ✗ Die Briefe stehen auf dem Tisch.✓ Die Briefe liegen auf dem Tisch.Flat things such as papers lie in German: die Briefe liegen auf dem Tisch. English “are on the table” does not say how.
  • ✗ Ich habe die Jacke an die Tür gehangen.✓ Ich habe die Jacke an die Tür gehängt.Hängen as an action (you hang something up) is regular: gehängt. Gehangen belongs to the state: die Jacke hat dort gehangen.
  • ✗ Es sagt im Vertrag.✓ Das steht im Vertrag.English says “It says in the contract”, but German says the text stands there: das steht im Vertrag.
