Passive in the present
The passive puts the action in focus, not the person who does it. It is very common in official texts, instructions and news. Form: werden (conjugated) + past participle at the end.

How to build it
- The accusative object of the active sentence becomes the subject (den Antrag → der Antrag).
- werden agrees with the new subject: der Antrag wird, die Anträge werden.
- The doer can be added with von + dative, but usually is left out.
- Without a subject: Es wird hier nicht geraucht / Hier wird nicht geraucht.

Common mistakes
- ✗ Das Auto ist repariert. (gerade jetzt)✓ Das Auto wird repariert.English “is repaired” uses be, but a process happening now is formed with werden in German: das Auto wird repariert.
- ✗ Das Formular wird per Hand ausfüllt.✓ Das Formular wird per Hand ausgefüllt. The passive needs the full participle, and a separable verb puts ge- after its prefix: aus-ge-füllt.
- ✗ Die Briefe wird jeden Tag gebracht.✓ Die Briefe werden jeden Tag gebracht.Werden agrees with the new subject: die Briefe is plural, so the verb is werden.
- ✗ In Österreich wird gesprochen Deutsch.✓ In Österreich wird Deutsch gesprochen.English says “German is spoken here”, but in German the participle closes the sentence: Deutsch comes before gesprochen.
- ✗ Das Formular wird von ich ausgefüllt.✓ Das Formular wird von mir ausgefüllt. The doer in a passive comes after von, which takes the dative: von mir, like English “by me”, not “by I”.
