Level A1

Negation with nicht and kein

German has two words for “not”: kein negates nouns, nicht negates everything else. Choosing the right one is one of the first big A1 skills.

kein: for nouns

Use kein where the positive sentence has ein or no article. It takes the same endings as ein.

  • Names: Das ist nicht Anna.

Where nicht goes

  • Negating the whole sentence: usually at the end (Ich verstehe das nicht).
  • But before the second verb, adjectives, places and prepositional phrases: Ich kann nicht kommen. Er wohnt nicht in Berlin.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Ich habe nicht ein Auto.✓ Ich habe kein Auto.English says “I don’t have a car”, but German does not combine nicht with ein: nicht ein becomes kein.
  • ✗ Ich tue nicht verstehen.✓ Ich verstehe nicht.English negates with “do not”, but German has no helper verb: nicht simply goes after the verb, ich verstehe nicht.
  • ✗ Ich nicht verstehe das.✓ Ich verstehe das nicht.English “I don’t understand it” puts the negation before the verb, but in German the verb stays second and nicht usually goes to the end.
  • ✗ Das ist kein teuer.✓ Das ist nicht teuer.Kein only goes before nouns; an adjective such as teuer is negated with nicht, as in English “not expensive”.
  • ✗ Das ist kein mein Pass.✓ Das ist nicht mein Pass. With a possessive such as mein the noun is already specific, so German uses nicht, just like English “not my passport”.
