Examples

  • Ich suche eine Wohnung.I am looking for a flat.
  • Hier ist ein Formular. Here is a form.
  • Wir haben Fragen. We have questions.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Wir brauchen ein Wohnung.✓ Wir brauchen eine Wohnung.English “a” never changes, but German uses eine for feminine nouns, and Wohnung is feminine like every noun in -ung.
  • ✗ Hast du eine Handy?✓ Hast du ein Handy?Handy looks like an English word but is a German one, and it is neuter: das Handy, so the article is ein.
  • ✗ Ich habe eine Fragen.✓ Ich habe Fragen.English can say “some questions”, but German has no plural form of ein: the plural noun stands without an article.
  • ✗ Da ist ein Café. Ein Café ist sehr gut.✓ Da ist ein Café. Das Café ist sehr gut.As with English “a café … the café”, once the thing has been mentioned you switch to der, die or das.
  • ✗ Da ist ein Frau.✓ Da ist eine Frau.Frau is feminine, so the article needs its -e: eine Frau. English “a woman” gives no signal, so the ending is easy to drop.
