Modal verbs (können, müssen, möchten…)

Modal verbs express ability, obligation, permission or wishes. The modal is conjugated in position 2, and the main verb goes to the end as an infinitive. This is called the sentence bracket (Satzklammer).

Key points

  • ich and er/sie/es have the same form with no ending: ich kann, er kann.
  • Most modals change their vowel in the singular (können → kann).
  • möchten is the polite way to say what you want: Ich möchte einen Kaffee.
  • nicht müssen = don’t have to; nicht dürfen = must not.

Examples

  • Ich kann gut kochen.I can cook well.
  • Du musst das Formular unterschreiben. You have to sign the form.
  • Hier darf man nicht rauchen. You must not smoke here.
  • Wir wollen im Sommer nach Italien fahren. We want to go to Italy in summer.
  • Soll ich dich abholen?Should I pick you up?
  • Ich möchte einen Termin machen.I would like to make an appointment.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Ich kann sprechen Deutsch.✓ Ich kann Deutsch sprechen.English “I can speak German” keeps the two verbs together, but German sends the infinitive to the end of the sentence.
  • ✗ Ich muss zu arbeiten.✓ Ich muss arbeiten.English says “I have to work” with “to”, but a German modal takes the bare infinitive: ich muss arbeiten.
  • ✗ Er kannt gut kochen.✓ Er kann gut kochen.Modals have no ending in the er form, just like English “he can”: er kann, er muss, er will.
  • ✗ Ich mag heute ins Kino gehen.✓ Ich möchte heute ins Kino gehen.Mag looks like English “may”, but it means “like”. For “I would like to go” German uses möchte.
  • ✗ Ich kann nicht kommen morgen.✓ Ich kann morgen nicht kommen. The infinitive closes the sentence, so morgen and nicht go before it: ich kann morgen nicht kommen. English puts the time at the end.
