Verbs with vowel change (fahren → fährt)
Some common verbs change their stem vowel, but only in the du and er/sie/es forms. All other forms are regular. There are three main patterns.
| a → ä | e → i | e → ie | |
|---|---|---|---|
| fahren | sprechen | lesen | |
| ich | fahre | spreche | lese |
| du | fährst | sprichst | liest |
| er/sie/es | fährt | spricht | liest |
| wir | fahren | sprechen | lesen |
Common verbs per pattern
- a → ä: fahren, schlafen, tragen, waschen, laufen (au → äu), lassen, fallen
- e → i: sprechen, helfen, geben, essen, nehmen (du nimmst), treffen, vergessen
- e → ie: lesen, sehen, empfehlen
- Special: wissen → ich weiß, du weißt, er weiß
Examples
- Er fährt mit dem Zug.He goes by train.
- Sprichst du Deutsch?Do you speak German?
- Sie liest die Zeitung. She is reading the newspaper.
- Was isst du gern? What do you like to eat?
- Nimmst du den Bus?Are you taking the bus?
- Er hilft mir.He is helping me.
Common mistakes
- ✗ Sie schlaft schon.✓ Sie schläft schon.English only adds -s for “she sleeps”, but schlafen also changes its vowel in the er/sie/es form: sie schläft.
- ✗ Was esst du heute?✓ Was isst du heute?Essen belongs to the e → i group, so the du form is isst; esst is the ihr form.
- ✗ Er seht den Film.✓ Er sieht den Film.Sehen changes e to ie in the du and er forms: er sieht. English “he sees” keeps the same vowel, which is why the change is easy to forget.
- ✗ Du weißst das.✓ Du weißt das.Wissen is a special case: ich weiß, du weißt, er weiß. Because the stem ends in ß, the du form takes only -t.
- ✗ Er lauft jeden Morgen.✓ Er läuft jeden Morgen.Laufen changes au to äu in the du and er forms: er läuft. English “he runs” has no vowel change to remind you.
