Many speakers use the dative with wegen and trotz in conversation (wegen dem Wetter). It is accepted in speech, but in letters and exams use the genitive.

Examples

  • Wegen des Streiks fährt heute kein Zug.Because of the strike, no trains are running today.
  • Trotz des Regens gingen wir spazieren.Despite the rain, we went for a walk.
  • Bitte zahlen Sie innerhalb einer Woche. Please pay within one week.
  • Während des Kurses darf man nicht telefonieren.Phone calls are not allowed during the course.
  • Aufgrund der hohen Nachfrage sind alle Termine vergeben.Due to high demand, all appointments are taken.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Wegen der Streik fällt der Unterricht aus.✓ Wegen des Streiks fällt der Unterricht aus.Wegen takes the genitive, so masculine der Streik becomes des Streiks. English “because of the strike” has no case.
  • ✗ Statt ein Brief schreibe ich eine E-Mail.✓ Statt eines Briefes schreibe ich eine E-Mail.Statt takes the genitive too: ein Brief becomes eines Briefes, with the -es on the noun.
  • ✗ Bitte zahlen Sie innerhalb zwei Wochen.✓ Bitte zahlen Sie innerhalb von zwei Wochen.A plural with no article cannot show the genitive, so German adds von: innerhalb von zwei Wochen.
  • ✗ Während der Kurs bleibt das Handy aus.✓ Während des Kurses bleibt das Handy aus.English “during the course” has no case, but während takes the genitive: des Kurses.
  • ✗ Weil des Streiks fährt kein Zug.✓ Wegen des Streiks fährt kein Zug.English “because” and “because of” look alike, but in German weil starts a clause and wegen goes with a noun.
