Level B2

je…desto

je … desto / umso means “the more … the more”. It connects two comparisons that grow together. The structure is unusual, so it’s worth learning as a pattern.

je + comparative… verb (end),desto + comparativeverb …
Je mehrich übe,desto besserspreche ich.
Je älterer wird,umso ruhigerist er.

Rules

  • The je part is a subordinate clause: verb at the end.
  • The desto / umso part: comparative right after desto, then the verb, then the subject.
  • desto and umso mean the same.
  • Short form without verbs: Je früher, desto besser.

Examples

  • Je mehr ich übe, desto besser spreche ich.The more I practise, the better I speak.
  • Je früher du kommst, umso besser. The earlier you come, the better.
  • Je länger ich in Deutschland lebe, desto mehr verstehe ich.The longer I live in Germany, the more I understand.
  • Je teurer die Wohnung ist, desto kleiner ist die Auswahl. The more expensive the flat, the smaller the choice.
  • Je älter er wird, desto ruhiger wird er.The older he gets, the calmer he becomes.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Desto länger ich warte, desto müder werde ich.✓ Je länger ich warte, desto müder werde ich.English repeats “the … the”, but German uses two different words: je for the first part, desto for the second.
  • ✗ Je mehr liest er, desto mehr weiß er.✓ Je mehr er liest, desto mehr weiß er.The je part is a subordinate clause, so its verb goes to the end: je mehr er liest.
  • ✗ Je früher wir fahren, umso gut.✓ Je früher wir fahren, umso besser. Both halves compare, so the second also needs a comparative: umso besser, like English “the better”.
  • ✗ Je mehr teuer die Miete ist, desto kleiner ist die Auswahl.✓ Je teurer die Miete ist, desto kleiner ist die Auswahl.English says “the more expensive”, but German forms the comparative with an ending: je teurer.
  • ✗ Je früher, desto besser ist.✓ Je früher, desto besser. The short form works like English “the sooner, the better”: no verb at all after desto besser.
