Genitive case
The genitive shows possession or belonging, like English “’s” or “of”. Ask Wessen? (whose?). It is standard in writing; in speech, von + dative often replaces it.
| definite | indefinite | noun | |
|---|---|---|---|
| masculine | des | eines | + -(e)s: des Mannes |
| feminine | der | einer | no change: der Frau |
| neuter | des | eines | + -(e)s: des Kindes |
| plural | der | – | no change: der Kinder |
Rules
- The genitive follows the noun it describes: das Auto meines Bruders.
- Short masculine/neuter nouns often take -es (des Mannes, des Tages), long ones -s (des Computers).
- Names take -s and come before the noun, no apostrophe: Olenas Wohnung.
- Spoken alternative: das Auto von meinem Bruder.
Examples
- Das ist das Auto meines Bruders. That is my brother’s car.
- Die Adresse der Firma steht hier. The company’s address is here.
- Das ist Olenas Wohnung. That is Olena’s flat.
- Am Ende des Monats zahle ich die Miete.I pay the rent at the end of the month.
- Die Kinder meiner Kollegin sind zwei und fünf.My colleague’s children are two and five.
Common mistakes
- ✗ Die Adresse von die Firma fehlt.✓ Die Adresse der Firma fehlt.English says “the address of the company”, but in writing German uses the genitive der Firma; von would at least need the dative von der Firma.
- ✗ Am Ende des Monat bekomme ich mein Gehalt.✓ Am Ende des Monats bekomme ich mein Gehalt. In the genitive the masculine noun itself also takes -s: des Monats. English “of the month” has no ending.
- ✗ Die Kinder meine Kollegin gehen schon zur Schule.✓ Die Kinder meiner Kollegin gehen schon zur Schule. For a feminine noun the genitive of mein is meiner: die Kinder meiner Kollegin.
- ✗ Der Firma Adresse ist falsch.✓ Die Adresse der Firma ist falsch.English puts the owner first (“the company’s address”), but a German genitive follows the noun. Only names go first.
- ✗ Das ist Maria Wohnung.✓ Das ist Marias Wohnung.A name used as an owner takes -s, like English ’s but without the apostrophe: Marias Wohnung.
