als or wenn?

Both als and wenn translate as “when”, but German strictly separates them. The decision depends on time and how often something happened.

In short

  • als = one event or one period in the past: Als ich Kind war … / Als ich nach Deutschland kam …
  • wenn = everything else: present, future, and repeated events in the past.
  • Both send the verb to the end.

Examples

When I came to Germany, I didn’t speak German. (once, past)
When I was a child, we lived in Odesa. (one period)
Whenever I was in Kyiv, I visited my grandma. (repeated)
  • Ruf mich an, wenn du ankommst.Call me when you arrive. (future)
  • Wenn ich müde bin, trinke ich Kaffee. When I’m tired, I drink coffee. (present)

Common mistakes

English uses “when” for everything, but one event in the past takes als in German: als ich nach Deutschland kam.
Als is only for the past. For the present and the future German uses wenn.
Jedes Mal shows a repeated event, and repeated events take wenn even in the past.
English “when” is not wann: wann only asks about time. A period in the past such as childhood takes als.
  • ✗ Als du morgen ankommst, ruf mich an.✓ Wenn du morgen ankommst, ruf mich an.Morgen is in the future, and als never refers to the future: wenn du morgen ankommst.
