Розщеплені речення (It was… that, What I need is…)
Порядок слів в англійській фіксований, тож щоб виділити частину речення, його розбивають на дві. Там, де українська просто переставляє слова, англійська вживає цю конструкцію.

- It wasn’t until midnight that they arrived.Вони приїхали аж опівночі.
- All you have to do is sign here.Вам треба лише підписати тут.
- It was in Odesa that we first met.Саме в Одесі ми вперше зустрілися.
Типові помилки
- ✗ It was John which broke the window.✓ It was John who broke the window.У розщепленому реченні про людину вживаємо відносне слово who, а не which.
- ✗ What I need are a holiday.✓ What I need is a holiday.Коли після what-речення стоїть іменник в однині (a holiday), дієслово має форму is.
- ✗ It were my parents who helped me.✓ It was my parents who helped me.У конструкції it was … who дієслово не узгоджується з іменником: завжди it was.
- ✗ What annoys me it is the noise.✓ What annoys me is the noise.Не повторюємо it у what-реченні: підмет уже виражений словом what.
- ✗ All what I want is peace.✓ All I want is peace.Після all вживаємо that або нічого, але не what.
