Tanımlıklar: ileri düzey
Temellerin ötesinde the, a ya da tanımlıksız kullanım arasındaki seçim, bir şeyden genel olarak mı yoksa belirli olarak mı söz ettiğinize bağlıdır. Türkçede tanımlık olmadığı için bu konu özellikle zordur.

Yerler ve adlar
- Nehirler, denizler, sıradağlar, çoğul ülke adlarıyla the: the Danube, the Alps, the Netherlands, the USA.
- Göller, tek dağlar, çoğu ülke ve sokak adıyla tanımlık yok: Lake Geneva, Everest, Ukraine, Oxford Street.
- Çalgılarla the: She plays the piano. Sporlarla tanımlık yok: He plays football.

Sık yapılan hatalar
- ✗ We swam in Danube.✓ We swam in the Danube.Nehir, deniz ve okyanus adları the alır: the Danube, the Black Sea. Türkçede tanımlık olmadığı için bu kolayca unutulur.
- ✗ We climbed the Everest.✓ We climbed Everest.Tek dağların adı tanımlık almaz: Everest, Mount Ararat. The sadece sıradağlarla kullanılır: the Alps.
- ✗ The rich should pay more and help poor.✓ The rich should pay more and help the poor.Bir grubu bir sıfatla anlatırken the gerekir: the poor, the rich. Türkçedeki “fakirlere yardım etmeli” tanımlık kullanmaz.
- ✗ She goes to the church every Sunday. (to pray)✓ She goes to church every Sunday.Bir kurumun asıl amacı için gidildiğinde tanımlık kullanılmaz: go to church, go to school, be in prison.
