Question tags (…, isn’t it?)
As question tags são perguntinhas no fim da frase, como o “não é?” ou “né?” do português. Confirmam uma informação ou pedem concordância. Frase afirmativa → tag negativa, e vice-versa.
| frase | tag |
|---|---|
| It is cold, | isn’t it? |
| You live here, | don’t you? |
| She can’t drive, | can she? |
| They went home, | didn’t they? |
| You’ve finished, | haven’t you? |
Casos especiais
- I am → aren’t I? I’m late, aren’t I?
- Imperativo → will you? Close the door, will you?
- Let’s → shall we? Let’s go, shall we?
- A tag repete o auxiliar e o pronome da frase; não existe uma forma fixa como o “né?” do português.
Exemplos
- Nice weather, isn’t it?Que tempo bom, né?
- You’re coming tomorrow, aren’t you?Você vem amanhã, não vem?
- He doesn’t eat meat, does he?Ele não come carne, come?
- We’ve met before, haven’t we?A gente já se conheceu, não foi?
- It isn’t far, is it?Não é longe, é?
Erros comuns
- ✗ You are from Brazil, no?✓ You are from Brazil, aren’t you?O “não?” ou “né?” do português não funciona em inglês: a tag repete o verbo da frase, aren’t you.
- ✗ She works here, isn’t it?✓ She works here, doesn’t she?O “não é?” do português é fixo, mas a tag inglesa acompanha o verbo e o sujeito: works pede doesn’t she.
- ✗ They can’t come, can’t they?✓ They can’t come, can they?Ao contrário do “né?” do português, a tag inverte a polaridade: depois de uma frase negativa, can they.
- ✗ You saw the game, don’t you?✓ You saw the game, didn’t you?A tag fica no mesmo tempo da frase: saw pede didn’t.
- ✗ I’m right, am not I?✓ I’m right, aren’t I?Com I am, a tag negativa padrão é aren’t I; am not I não se usa, embora pareça o mais lógico.
