A ordem muda, o sentido continua.

elemento antecipadoneutroantecipado
objetoI can’t stand his attitude.His attitude I can’t stand.
complementoThe results were more worrying.More worrying were the results.
lugar (com inversão)A small house stood on the hill.On the hill stood a small house.
concessão com as / thoughAlthough it was strange, it was true.Strange as it was, it was true.

Observações

  • Depois de expressões de lugar ou movimento antecipadas, sujeito e verbo muitas vezes trocam de lugar: Into the room walked a tall man.
  • Não há troca quando o sujeito é um pronome: Into the room he walked.
  • as / though depois de um adjetivo = although: Tired though she was, she kept going.

Exemplos

  • That I don’t believe for a second.
  • Much more important is the question of cost.
  • Here comes the bus.Lá vem o ônibus.
  • Try as he might, he couldn’t open it.Por mais que tentasse, ele não conseguiu abrir.
  • Gone are the days of cheap flights.Já se foram os tempos das passagens baratas.

Erros comuns

  • ✗ That film I didn’t like it at all.✓ That film I didn’t like at all.O português falado às vezes retoma o objeto (“esse filme eu não gostei dele”), mas em inglês o objeto antecipado não se repete com it.
  • ✗ Into the kitchen walked she.✓ Into the kitchen she walked.
  • ✗ Here the bus comes, let’s go!✓ Here comes the bus, let’s go!Com here e um substantivo como sujeito, o verbo vem antes dele: here comes the bus.
  • ✗ Although tired as she was, she kept working.✓ Tired as she was, she kept working.
