Telling the time and days of the week
Ukrainian uses ordinal numbers for hours: перша година (one o’clock, literally “the first hour”). To say when, use о / об + locative.
| question | answer |
|---|---|
| Котра година? (What time is it?) | Пʼята година. / Пів на шосту. / Пʼятнадцять хвилин на сьому. |
| О котрій? (At what time?) | О пʼятій. Об одинадцятій. О пів на шосту. |
Days of the week
понеділок, вівторок, середа, четвер, пʼятниця, субота, неділя. “On Monday” = у понеділок (accusative).
Examples
- Зустріч о десятій.The meeting is at ten.
- Магазин зачиняється о пів на девʼяту.The shop closes at half past eight.
- У середу я працюю вдома.On Wednesday I work from home.
- Побачимося в суботу!See you on Saturday!
- Концерт починається о сьомій.The concert starts at seven.
Common mistakes
- ✗ Урок у третя.✓ Урок о третій.The time uses о and the locative form of the ordinal, as English at ten has no case.
- ✗ Побачимося в понеділку.✓ Побачимося у понеділок.On Monday is expressed with the accusative in this construction.
- ✗ Магазин відчиняється о пʼять.✓ Магазин відчиняється о пʼятій.The hour takes an ordinal in the locative, which English at five does not use.
- ✗ Котрий час?✓ Котра година?The question is котра година, because година is feminine, unlike English what time.
- ✗ Прийду о одинадцятій.✓ Прийду об одинадцятій.The form об is used before a vowel for easier pronunciation.
