Prefixes пів- and напів-

пів is now written together with the noun: півгодини, півкілограма. Before a vowel or я, ю, є, ї it takes an apostrophe: пів’яблука. Before a capital letter (a name) a hyphen: пів-Києва.

Examples

  • Я чекала півгодини.I waited for half an hour.
  • Наш проєкт почнеться восени.Our project will start in autumn.
  • Можна півкілограма яблук?Could I have half a kilo of apples?
  • Це наш проєкт.This is our project.
  • Мені потрібно півлітра молока.I need half a litre of milk.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Ми працювали пів року.✓ Ми працювали півроку.Пів is written together with the noun, as English half an hour is written separately.
  • ✗ Наш проект починається восени.✓ Наш проєкт починається восени.Loanwords with є after a vowel are written with є.
  • ✗ Дай мені пів яблука.✓ Дай мені півʼяблука.Before я an apostrophe joins пів to the noun.
  • ✗ Пів Києва спить.✓ Пів-Києва спить.A hyphen is used before a capital letter, so пів-Києва, which English half of Kyiv does not.
  • ✗ Вона автор цієї книги.✓ Вона авторка цієї книги.Feminine forms such as авторка are standard, whereas English author is neutral.
