Ways to express the passive
Ukrainian has several ways to say that something is done without focusing on who does it. In everyday speech, active sentences without a subject are often preferred.
| construction | example | style |
|---|---|---|
| -но / -то form | Лист написано. Магазин зачинено. | very common, official and neutral |
| бути + participle | Лист був написаний учора. | neutral, describes a state |
| 3rd person plural, no subject | Тут будують школу. Кажуть, що … | everyday speech |
| -ся verb | Квитки продаються в касі. | processes, imperfective only |
Who did it?
- With бути + participle, the doer goes in the instrumental: Лист був написаний директором.
- With the -но / -то form, avoid naming the doer: prefer an active sentence: Директор написав лист.
- The -ся passive with a doer (будинок будується робітниками) is considered unnatural.
