Particles: же, ж, бо, хіба, невже, таки

Particles are small words that add emotion, emphasis or attitude. They are hard to translate but make Ukrainian sound alive and native.

Notes

  • же after a consonant, ж after a vowel: Він же знає. Вона ж знає.
  • таки takes a hyphen in fixed combinations: все-таки, так-таки, знову-таки, but is written separately elsewhere: він таки прийшов.
  • хіба expects “no”; невже expresses real surprise.

Examples

  • Ти ж обіцяв!But you promised!
  • Хіба так можна?How can you do that?
  • Невже ти вже закінчив?Have you really finished already?
  • Я все-таки поїду.I’ll go anyway.
  • Він дзвонив аж п’ять разів.He called as many as five times.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Він знає же.✓ Він же знає.The particle follows the word it stresses and does not close the sentence.
  • ✗ Вона же знає.✓ Вона ж знає.After a vowel the short form ж is used, so вона ж знає, a particle English she knows lacks.
  • ✗ Все таки я поїду.✓ Все-таки я поїду.Все-таки is written with a hyphen, as English all the same is not.
  • ✗ Іди бо сюди!✓ Іди-бо сюди!The particle is attached to the verb with a hyphen.
  • ✗ Знову таки він запізнився.✓ Знову-таки він запізнився.The fixed combination takes a hyphen, as in знову-таки, and English once again is not hyphenated.
