Instrumental case (орудний)

The instrumental answers ким? чим? It expresses with whom, by what means, and what someone works as or becomes.

When to use it

• Together with: з другом, з мамою.
• Means of transport and tools, without a preposition: їхати автобусом, писати ручкою.
• Jobs and roles: працювати лікарем, бути вчителькою, стати інженером.
• Position prepositions: над, під, перед, за, між: під столом, між домом і парком.

• Я живу з батьками.I live with my parents.

Common mistakes

• ✗ Я працюю лікар.✓ Я працюю лікарем.A job after працювати goes into the instrumental, whereas English works as a doctor needs as.
