Dative case (давальний)
The dative answers кому? чому? It marks the person who receives something, and the person who feels or needs something: Мені холодно. Мені подобається.

Pronouns
я → мені, ти → тобі, він → йому, вона → їй, ми → нам, ви → вам, вони → їм
When to use it
- Giving, telling, helping: дати мамі, сказати йому, допомогти сусідові.
- Liking: Мені подобається Київ (Kyiv pleases me).
- Age, feelings, need: Мені 30 років. Йому сумно. Нам треба йти.

Common mistakes
- ✗ Я дав книгу мама.✓ Я дав книгу мамі.The person who receives something goes into the dative, which English gave Mum a book does not mark.
- ✗ Скажи він правду.✓ Скажи йому правду.The pronoun after сказати is dative, so він becomes йому.
- ✗ Я холодно.✓ Мені холодно.Feelings use the dative, and English I am cold is built with a subject.
- ✗ Допоможи мій друг.✓ Допоможи моєму другові.Допомогти takes the dative, and the possessive agrees with it.
- ✗ Подаруй друзі книги.✓ Подаруй друзям книги.The recipient takes the dative plural ending -ям.
