Euphony: у / в, і / й, з / із / зі
Ukrainian avoids clusters of consonants or vowels that are hard to pronounce. Several short words and prefixes therefore have alternating forms, chosen by the sounds around them.
| pair | after a vowel | after a consonant / pause |
|---|---|---|
| у / в | в: Вона в Києві. | у: Він у Києві. У Львові тепло. |
| і / й | й: мама й тато | і: брат і сестра |
| з / із / зі | з: вийшла з дому | із between consonants: брат із сестрою; зі before з, с, ц, ч, ш, щ and consonant clusters: зі школи, зі мною |
Notes
- Before в, ф, льв, св, тв use у: у Вінниці, у Франції, у Львові.
- Use і (not й) before й, є, ї, ю, я: Ольга і Юрій.
- The same applies to prefixes and initial letters: учителька / вчителька, уже / вже.
Examples
- Я живу в Одесі, а брат у Харкові.I live in Odesa, and my brother in Kharkiv.
- Він і вона прийшли разом.He and she came together.
- Ходімо зі мною!Come with me!
- Діти повернулися зі школи.The children came back from school.
- Вона працює в офісі, а він — у банку.She works in an office, and he works in a bank.
Common mistakes
- ✗ Я живу в Вінниці.✓ Я живу у Вінниці.У is used before words beginning with в, which keeps the sounds apart.
- ✗ Ольга й Юрій прийшли.✓ Ольга і Юрій прийшли.Before the letter й the form і is used and not й.
- ✗ Він розмовляв з мною.✓ Він розмовляв зі мною.Before мною the preposition becomes зі for easier pronunciation.
- ✗ Брат з сестрою пішли.✓ Брат із сестрою пішли.Between consonants the longer form із is used, a rule English with does not have.
- ✗ Ми їдемо із Харкова.✓ Ми їдемо з Харкова.After a vowel, the short form з is used, so з Харкова, and English from has one form.
