Adjective agreement (новий, нова, нове)
Adjectives change their ending to match the gender, number and case of the noun. Here are the basic (nominative) forms.
| hard stem | soft stem | |
|---|---|---|
| masc. | новий будинок | синій светр |
| fem. | нова квартира | синя сукня |
| neut. | нове вікно | синє небо |
| plural | нові будинки | сині очі |
Notes
- Most adjectives are hard (-ий). Soft ones (-ій) are few: синій, літній, вечірній, сусідній.
- The plural has one form for all genders: -і.
- Ordinal numbers and many pronouns work the same way: перший день, перша зустріч.
Examples
- Це велика кухня і світла кімната.This is a big kitchen and a bright room.
- У мене новий телефон.I have a new phone.
- Сьогодні гарна погода.The weather is nice today.
- Це українські книжки.These are Ukrainian books.

Common mistakes

- ✗ У мене нова годинник.✓ У мене новий годинник.Годинник is masculine, so the adjective ends in -ий, whereas English new never changes.
- ✗ Нова будинки стоять тут.✓ Нові будинки стоять тут.The plural has one adjective form, -і, for every gender, while English new has no plural.
- ✗ Синя небо гарне.✓ Синє небо гарне.Небо is neuter, so the soft adjective ends in -є.
- ✗ Сьогодні гарний ніч.✓ Сьогодні гарна ніч.Ніч is feminine despite its soft sign, so it takes гарна.
