Passé composé or imparfait?
Both are past tenses. The passé composé tells what happened (completed events). The imparfait describes the situation (background, habits, descriptions).

The imparfait sets the scene, the passé composé interrupts it: Je dormais quand le téléphone a sonné.
Verbs that change nuance
- J’ai su (I found out) / Je savais (I knew).
- J’ai connu (I met) / Je connaissais (I knew someone).
- J’ai pu (I managed) / Je pouvais (I was able to).

- ✗ Pendant que je lisais, le téléphone sonnait.✓ Pendant que je lisais, le téléphone a sonné.A single interruption is a completed event, so it needs the passé composé.
