  • Negation goes around avoir: Je n’ai pas compris.
  • Short adverbs go between: J’ai déjà mangé. Il a bien dormi.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ J’ai finit mon travail.✓ J’ai fini mon travail. The participle of -ir verbs ends in -i with no t, unlike the English past ending.
  • ✗ Nous avons vendé la voiture.✓ Nous avons vendu la voiture.Regular -re verbs form their participle with -u, not -é.
  • ✗ Elle a prendu le bus.✓ Elle a pris le bus.Prendre has an irregular participle, pris, which has to be memorised.
  • ✗ Je n’ai compris pas.✓ Je n’ai pas compris.Pas goes between avoir and the participle, since ne … pas wraps around the auxiliary.
  • ✗ Tu as visité déjà Paris ?✓ Tu as déjà visité Paris ?Short adverbs such as déjà go between avoir and the participle, unlike English ever visited.
