Participial clauses
Formal French compresses subordinate clauses into participle constructions. They express time, cause or condition without a conjunction.
| form | example | equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| absolute construction (own subject) | Le dîner fini, on a joué aux cartes.
Rules
- The participle refers to the subject of the main clause: Arrivée à la gare, elle… (not: Arrivée à la gare, le train était parti ✗).
- With an own subject (absolute construction) agreement follows that subject: La nuit tombée, …
Having lost his keys, he slept at a friend’s.
- Les travaux terminés, la route a rouvert.Once the work was finished, the road reopened.
- Fatiguée, elle s’est couchée tôt.Being tired, she went to bed early.
After reading the letter, he burnt it.
- Voyant la pluie, ils sont rentrés.Seeing the rain, they went home.
Common mistakes
After après French needs a past infinitive, which is avoir + participle, where English after finishing uses -ing.
Partir takes être in the past infinitive, so après partir is not possible, unlike English after leaving.
- ✗ Ayant arrivé, elle a appelé.✓ Étant arrivée, elle a appelé.Arriver takes être, and the participle agrees with the feminine subject.
In an absolute construction the participle agrees with its own subject, la nuit.
A participle used alone agrees with the subject of the main clause, il.
