Formal connectors for essays
Written arguments (dissertation, synthèse, reports) rely on a set of formal connectors. They structure the text and signal logic.
| function | connectors |
|---|---|
| opposing | néanmoins, toutefois, en revanche, or |
Tricky ones
- en effet = indeed / as a matter of fact: it explains the previous sentence, it does not mean in effect.
- or = now, yet: introduces a fact that changes the argument: Tout homme est mortel. Or Socrate est un homme.
- en revanche = on the other hand (contrast), not in return.
- dès lors = from then on / consequently.
