Common mistakes
- ✗ Je n’ai personne vu.✓ Je n’ai vu personne.Personne goes after the participle, whereas rien goes before it.
- ✗ Je n’ai vu rien.✓ Je n’ai rien vu.Rien goes between the auxiliary and the participle, while English nothing follows the verb.
- ✗ Personne est venu.✓ Personne n’est venu.A negative subject still needs ne before the verb, which English nobody does not require.
- ✗ Elle ne habite plus à Lyon.✓ Elle n’habite plus à Lyon.Ne becomes n’ before a vowel, as it does in the simple negative.
- ✗ Je n’ai encore pas fini.✓ Je n’ai pas encore fini. The fixed order is pas encore, so the two words cannot be swapped.
