Common mistakes

  • ✗ Parles plus lentement !✓ Parle plus lentement !The tu imperative of -er verbs drops the final s, a distinction English commands do not have.
  • ✗ Vas à la maison !✓ Va à la maison !Aller also drops the s in the imperative unless y follows.
  • ✗ Ne fais le pas.✓ Ne le fais pas.In a negative command the pronoun stays between ne and the verb.
  • ✗ Donnez moi le.✓ Donnez-le-moi !In a positive command pronouns come after the verb, linked by hyphens, which English give it to me never does.
  • ✗ Soit calme !✓ Sois calme !Être has an irregular imperative, sois, which looks different from the present tense, unlike English be.
