Inversion after adverbs and in incises

Beyond questions, formal French inverts subject and verb after certain adverbs at the start of a sentence and in reporting clauses.

peut-êtrePeut-être a-t-il raison.Perhaps he is right.
sans douteSans doute viendra-t-elle.She will probably come.
aussi (= therefore)Il pleuvait. Aussi sommes-nous restés.So we stayed.
à peine … queÀ peine était-il arrivé qu’il repartit. No sooner had he arrived than he left.
ainsi, encore (= even so)Encore faut-il le prouver. It still has to be proven.
reporting clause« Je pars », dit-il.“I’m leaving,” he said.

Rules

  • With a noun subject: noun + verb + pronoun: Peut-être Marie a-t-elle raison.
  • Add -t- between vowels: a-t-il, dit-elle (no t needed after -t).
  • Standard alternative without inversion: peut-être que / sans doute que: Peut-être qu’il a raison.
  • aussi at the start = therefore; aussi in the middle = also.

Examples

  • « C’est fini », murmura-t-elle.“It’s over,” she whispered.
  • Toujours est-il que rien n’a changé.The fact remains that nothing has changed.
  • Ainsi parlait le vieil homme. Thus spoke the old man.
  • Rares sont ceux qui l’ont vu.Few are those who have seen it.
  • Aussi est-il parti sans rien dire.So he left without saying anything.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Peut-être il a raison.✓ Peut-être a-t-il raison. After peut-être at the start, formal French inverts the subject and verb, unlike English perhaps he is right.
  • ✗ Sans doute elle viendra.✓ Sans doute viendra-t-elle.Sans doute at the start triggers inversion, with -t- between two vowels, a feature English probably does not have.
  • ✗ Peut-être a Marie raison.✓ Peut-être Marie a-t-elle raison.With a noun subject, the noun goes first and a pronoun follows the verb.
  • ✗ À peine il était arrivé qu’il repartit.✓ À peine était-il arrivé qu’il repartit.À peine at the start requires inversion of the subject and the verb, like English hardly had he.
  • ✗ Peut-être a-il raison.✓ Peut-être a-t-il raison.A -t- is inserted between a vowel and il or elle in inversion.
