Registers: formal, standard, informal
French separates registers more sharply than English. The same idea changes in grammar, not just vocabulary.
| formal (soutenu) | standard (courant) | informal (familier) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| question | Où allez-vous ? | Où est-ce que vous allez ? | Vous allez où ? |
| negation | Je ne sais point. | Je ne sais pas. | Je sais pas. / Chais pas. |
| we | nous allons | nous allons / on va | on va |
| this / that | cela | cela / ça | ça |
| vocabulary | un véhicule, se rendre | une voiture, aller | une bagnole, aller |
Typical markers
- Formal: inversion, ne kept, passé simple, subjonctif imparfait, dont, lequel, nominalisation.
- Informal: dropped ne, on for nous, ça, y a for il y a, dislocation (Moi, je…), verlan (ouf = fou, relou = lourd).
- Emails: Bonjour Madame, … Je vous prie d’agréer, Madame, l’expression de mes salutations distinguées. (formal letter) / Cordialement (standard email).
Examples

Common mistakes
- ✗ Madame la Directrice, j’ai pas de réponse.✓ Madame la Directrice, je n’ai pas de réponse. In writing to a superior, ne must not be dropped, as it often is in speech; English formal writing also avoids don’t.
- ✗ Salut Madame, je vous écris pour une question.✓ Bonjour Madame, je vous écris pour une question.Salut is informal, and a letter to an unknown person needs a polite greeting, as English hi would be too casual.
- ✗ Je te saurais gré de bien vouloir répondre.✓ Je vous saurais gré de bien vouloir répondre. The formal phrase is paired with vous, since tu would clash with the register.
- ✗ Ça va, Monsieur le Maire ?✓ Comment allez-vous, Monsieur le Maire ?A person of high status is addressed in the formal register, with vous, which English you does not mark.
- ✗ Y a un problème avec votre commande.✓ Il y a un problème avec votre commande.In a written message to a customer y a is too informal, so il y a is used.
