Common mistakes

  • ✗ Quand j’étaient petit, je jouais au foot.✓ Quand j’étais petit, je jouais au foot. The je form of être in the imparfait is étais, and -aient belongs only to ils and elles.
  • ✗ Il pleuvais hier.✓ Il pleuvait hier.Il takes -ait, whereas -ais belongs to je and tu, and English was makes no such difference.
  • ✗ Tu finisais tes devoirs.✓ Tu finissais tes devoirs.Verbs in -ir keep the -iss- of the nous form, which English verbs never need.
  • ✗ Nous étons petits.✓ Nous étions petits. The imparfait of nous ends in -ions, not -ons.
  • ✗ Hier, il faisait beau et nous allons à la plage.✓ Hier, il faisait beau et nous allions à la plage. Both verbs describe the past, so the second must also be in the imparfait.
