Notes

  • English uses “have been”; Spanish uses the present: I’ve lived here for three years = Vivo aquí desde hace tres años.
  • Questions: ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que estudias español? ¿Desde cuándo trabajas aquí?
  • durante = during, for a finished period: Viví en Kyiv durante diez años.

Examples

  • Nos conocimos hace mucho tiempo. We met a long time ago.
  • Estudio español desde septiembre.I’ve been studying Spanish since September.
  • Llevo una hora esperando.I’ve been waiting for an hour.
  • ¿Desde cuándo tienes fiebre?Since when have you had a fever?
  • Hace dos meses que vivo aquí.I have been living here for two months.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Vivo aquí desde tres años.✓ Vivo aquí desde hace tres años.For a length of time use desde hace. English “for three years” has no desde, so learners use the wrong one.
  • ✗ Hace tres años vivo aquí.✓ Hace tres años que vivo aquí.When hace comes first, the present-tense clause needs que. English “I have lived here for three years” uses a perfect tense.
  • ✗ Vivo aquí hace 2020.✓ Vivo aquí desde 2020.A starting date takes desde. English “since 2020” works the same way, but hace is wrongly used for dates.
  • ✗ He vivido aquí por tres años.✓ Llevo tres años viviendo aquí.Spanish normally uses the present, not the perfect, for something that continues. English uses “have lived”.
  • ✗ Llegué desde hace tres años.✓ Llegué hace tres años.A single past event takes hace alone. English “three years ago” is a direct match, but desde hace is for ongoing states.
