Common mistakes

  • ✗ Hola, señor García: le escribo…✓ Estimado señor García: le escribo…A formal letter opens with Estimado/a. English “Dear” is the closest, while “Hola” is only for friends.
  • ✗ ¿Tú podrías ayudarme?✓ ¿Podría ayudarme? With a client use usted and the polite conditional. English “you” does not mark the register, so tú is easy to choose.
  • ✗ Te saludo atentamente.✓ Le saludo atentamente. The formal closing uses le, not te. English “yours sincerely” has no pronoun to copy.
  • ✗ Gracias por tu atención.✓ Gracias por su atención.Formal writing uses su for usted. English “your” is the same for everyone.
  • ✗ Chao, señor García.✓ Hasta luego, señor García.Chao is informal. With señor use hasta luego or adiós.
